夏休みに読んだ本はこの三冊

Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - And How It Can Renew America

これから中国やインドといったEmerging Countriesが急速に発展することによってどのような世界的な問題が出てくるか、それに対応する為に先進国（主にアメリカ）がどのように進むべきか、またその戦略の中でGreen Technologyがいかに重要かを永遠と説いている。国際問題（energy, climate change, and food crisis）を語る上で中国がいかに重要な国であるかを説く章も面白かった。

民主党鳩山代表が2020年の日本の温室効果ガス排出量を1990年比で25％削減するという宣言も、方向的には面白いけどリーダーシップの取り方には問題があると思う。この問題がいかに重要で、そして日本がこの問題に積極的に取り組むことがいかにチャンスになるかを説明しないと、国民と産業界からの理解を得るのは難しい。

In the case of Energy-Climate Era, we need leaders who can shape the issues so that people understand why ignoring them is such a threat and why rising to them is such an opportunity.

そして池田さんも言うように

便益だけ強調して費用を無視するのは、戦略的な政策とはいえない

危機であると同時にとても大きなチャンスであることを理解したリーダーの下で、世界がどんだけのスピードでこれらの問題に対応していくか、これからも注目する。

Government 2.0: Using Technology to Improve Education, Cut Red Tape, Reduce Gridlock, and Enhance Democracy

"Government 2.0"の運動や様々な実例を集めた本。とてもテクニカルでFact-Baseだから、読みやすくはないけどこの動きに興味ある人には、Referenceがわりにもなるんでおすすめ。
この本にも取り上げられていたNYC.govのサービスが面白い。

NYC.gov, the city's online portal (motto: "Always Open"). There, one click could find information on missing persons, locating hospital patients, donating to victims' funds, finding temporary shelter, relocation assistance for businesses, school closings, and a host of other issues. Commuters could find out which roads, tunnels, and bridges were closed. learn the rules for entering the Midtown tunnel, and see video of the traffic flow at hundreds of major intersections.
NYC.gov is organized by "intentions" - things you might want to do, such as pay a ticket or renew a license. You don't have to know which department you want, just what you want to do. The "I Want To" section of NYC.gov, for instance, lets New Yorkers conduct dozens of city transactions online: pay a parking ticket, get a birth certificate, schedule a trash pickup, obtain a business license, find a towed car, file a complaint, and so on.

NYC.govと東京都のホームページを比べながら、一つのサービスを見つけて、受けるのにどれだけ時間をかかるのかとかやってみると結構勉強になる。

さまよう刃

最近ノンフィクションしか読んでなかったんで、久々に東野圭吾の本が読みたくなって買ってみたけど、やっぱいい。ノンフィクションよりもリアルに表現する文章力と、一瞬で読み終えてしまうぐらいの緊迫感がたまらなかった。

"You are what you do, not what you say."
これらの本を読むのと同時に、自分がどのように関わってゆけるか、どうやって知識を行動にApplyできるかを常に意識しないといけない。今は来年のCo-opで自分が注目する分野の企業、または地域で働けるように準備する。

明日からFall Semester。Third yearのクラスも始まってSFUの生活が本格的にスタートする大事なセメスター。
それにバンクーバー五輪のボランティアトレーニングに、五輪に向けたイベント企画まで盛りだくさん。
気合い入れて頑張ります♩
